I recently read an essay by Pat Mora to a English classroom full of bored students. The essay was entitled My Own True Name and it was from a collection of poems for children by Mora.
I was impressed by the essay because it was about how to write. Intended for young writers but applicable to anyone, she speaks of reading extensively, collecting vocabulary words like objects and writing and revising regularly. She spoke of how it is important to write about the pains and joys of life.
I couldn't find a copy of the essay online but I did find another essay on her website about Leading From the Heart.
