Lessons at the Park

I was in the park today exercising. Here is a field trip idea that am elementary teacher can use to teach science, English, and math.

Age K-4
Science: Take the children in the morning and have them sit beside the pond. Have them write in their journals what they observe about the pond. First read an example entry to them. Give them twenty minutes to write. Then ask some children to share their writing. Talk to them about the kind of water it is, the kinds of animals that live in the water and how trash can affect the pond.

English: Have the children write and rewrite a few simple sentences that the teacher makes that are about the pond. Practice spelling a few words about nature. Touch on new letters of the alphabet and print skills.

Math: Take the children to an adult exercise station in the park and do simple addition and subtraction using the repetitions and minutes of aerobic exercise that is recommended.
